From the company's beginning in 1972, Willis A. Smith Construction, Inc. has always been known for quality construction. Although the size and complexity of the projects has grown over the years, the emphasis on quality construction has always remained. Our projects have ranged from churches, large office complexes, public schools, museums, and classical theaters such as the Asolo Theatre and the Sarasota Opera House. Though these projects vary widely in size and scope, we insist on providing the same level of attention and quality to all customers, and work with them to achieve the results they seek within their budgetary means.
We have successfully serviced the Sarasota-Manatee area since the 1970s, yet we do not pause to rest on each past success. We are continuously evolving as a modern-day construction company, while holding fast to the business and construction approaches that have distinguished us from the competition for four decades.
Key project types include:
- Healthcare facilities (Hospitals, Assisted Living Facilities, Research Facilities, Medical Office Buildings, Hospices, etc)
- Educational facilities (K-12, Private Schools, Community Colleges and Universities)
- Sustainable construction
- Special-use facilities (Theaters, Country Clubs, Visitor's Centers, etc)
- Performing Arts
- Religious institutions
- Historic Restoration
- Commercial buildings
Additionally, we have established ourselves as the local leaders in green building as part of our commitment to sustainable and responsible construction. By correctly anticipating the emergence of green building practices in the construction industry, we have been able to stay several years ahead of the competition in this area. While other companies are just now entering the field, we already have a proven track record in green building. More than 70% of our management and project managers are LEED Accredited Professionals (certified green experts) ready to meet our client demands.
In December of 2008, the 18,000 square foot Willis A. Smith Construction, Inc. headquarters obtained LEED® Gold Certification. Some of the highlight features include solar photovoltaic panels, a cool roof, twin 3,000 gallon tanks for the water harvesting cistern and xeroscaping. Our combined savings from all of our green measures has resulted in a substantial reduction in operating cost - 61.7% reduction in electrical usage and 85% reduction in potable water usage.
We experimented and used our own money to build our new green headquarters. We utilized this project as a "giant test tube," to further educate our staff, project managers and executive team members on the best practices of sustainable construction. The "giant test tube" was a learning tool so we could better serve our clients. The other goals were to establish Willis A. Smith Construction, Inc. as a leader in sustainability, entice others to be sustainable, and to make a community statement. By demonstrating that green construction can be used in a successful business model, we have shown that building green is the right thing to do and is a financially sound and viable practice.
